Why I Love Mangoes

The mango is pretty much my favorite inanimate object. It is the perfect fruit. I lived for eighteen years before I ever encountered a mango in the flesh, and that moment permanently shifted me in a new and delicious direction. I was visiting a friend in California. She turned to me and offered up a slice of dried mango. “What was that?” I wondered. I put the dried fruit in my mouth, chewed a couple times and immediately knew I had encountered something very, very special. Read more about mango smoothies.

Ten years later, I still love mangoes with unbridled passion. Despite all the delicious tastes that exist in the world, nothing compares to the flavor of mango. And so, I’m here to share a little with you about why it is the mango among all fruits that is the best. Now, I know that we all have our favorites, and I know that my selection of the mango for best fruit in the world is purely subjective. Nevertheless, I’m here to share this passion for the mango with you in the hopes that you’ll remember to bring a little mango sweetness into your life whenever you can. Click here.

At one point in college, I even curated some mango parties for a while.

At this time I’m referring to when I was in college, I lived in a dorm that was a cooperative house. The students were responsible for making their own meals. Every night, a cook crew made up of five students would execute a meal for all 50 residents. Afterward, a cleaning crew took care of cleanup. The dude in charge of ordering all our produce was named Brian. And Brian loved anything that would help people have a better food experience in the dorm. I lived in that dorm with my best friend, and we stood aghast watching people throw whole mangoes into the trash whenever the dorm received a fresh shipment. Nobody seemed to realize you needed to let the mangoes ripen. The trash cans were filling up with uneaten mangoes simply because of a lack of education about mango ripening! I couldn’t stand by and not do something.

Seeing that mango waste broke my heart, and I had to change it. I concocted a crazy plan with Brian: I would intercept the next mango shipment and store all the mango crates under my bed until the fruit was perfectly ripe. At that point, we would hold a huge mango party in our dorm’s common area and let everyone taste what ripe mango was like.

That first night when we brought out the mangoes, it turned into one of the best nights of the school year. People swarmed the dining room excited to see what was going on. After all, these were mangoes we’re talking about. They elicit the passion in people. Since I’d kept careful tabs on the ripening process, virtually every mango was in prime condition for eating. The mangoes were spread out on large trays. They’d been sliced and were bright orange and incredibly creamy. On each tray, we also put some sliced limes and cayenne pepper. If you’ve never eaten fresh mangoes like that, then you should definitely try it. Simply drip a little of the juice from the lime onto the mango and then add just a dash of cayenne. If you’re super sensitive to spicy foods, you can leave the cayenne out.

Fast forward a decade, and I’m still thoroughly and completely in love with mangoes. My daily mango smoothie is one of the dependable highlights of my day. It’s been amazing to see mango become more and more available virtually everywhere. No matter where you are, if you’re reading this right now, then I bet you can find some mangoes to enjoy somehow. Go have some mangoes and enjoy yourself! For more head here.
